Biles leads women’s all-around at mid-point of 2019 U.S. Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 9, 2019 – 2016 Olympic and 2018 World all-around champion Simone Biles of Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre, is at a familiar place, the top of the all-around standings, after the first of two days of the senior women’s competition at the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. Konnor McClain of Cross Lanes, W.Va./Revolution Gymnastics, had the top mark for the juniors after day one.

Competition continues tomorrow with defending all-around champion Sam Mikulak of Newport Coast, Calif./U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, seeking his sixth U.S. title at 6:30 p.m. CT on the second day of men’s competition, which includes the junior men at 1 p.m. CT. Tomorrow from 3:30-5:30 p.m., fans can enjoy a free fan fest for gymnastics fans, whether they have event tickets or not, on Grand Boulevard just outside of Sprint Center, as well as inside the KC Live! Block of the Power & Light District. U.S.-based fans can watch the men compete live on NBCSN at 8 p.m. ET.

The women and men are vying for junior and senior national team berths and national titles. Each day of competition counts equally, and final rankings are based on a two-day total. Performances at the U.S. Championships are also part of the selection process for the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany. The U.S. Championships is part of the Team USA Champions Series

Biles is seeking to become the first woman in nearly 70 years to win six senior U.S. all-around titles. Biles has the opportunity to tie with Clara Schroth Lomady, who won the women’s all-around from 1945-46 and 1949-52, as the only women to win six U.S. all-around titles.

In today’s competition, Biles earned a 58.650 for the all-around, as well as the top score in three of the four events: vault, 15.400 (15.300/15.500); balance beam, 14.950; and floor exercise, 14.350. Sunisa Lee of St. Paul, Minn./Midwest Gymnastics Center, was second at 56.900, and two-time World silver-medalist Jade Carey of Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Sunrays, was third at 56.100.

2018 World team gold-medalist Riley McCusker of Brielle, N.J./MG Elite, was fourth at 55.700. Leanne Wong of Overland Park, Kansas/Great American Gymnastics Express, and Trinity Thomas of York, Pa./University of Florida Gymnastics, tied for fifth at 55.400. Rounding out the top 10 were: Jordan Chiles of Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre, seventh (55.350); 2017 World all-around champion and 2018 World team gold-medalist Morgan Hurd of Middletown, Del./First State Gymnastics, eighth (55.050); and 2018 World team gold-medalist Grace McCallum of Isanti, Minn./Twin City Twisters, and MyKayla Skinner of Gilbert, Ariz./Desert Lights Gymnastics, tied for ninth (54.900).

For the juniors, McClain tallied at 56.500 to lead the mid-point all-around rankings. Olivia Greaves of Staten Island, N.Y./MG Elite, was on her heels at 56.000. Kayla DiCello of Boyds, Md./Hill’s Gymnastics, completed the top three (55.700). The top gymnasts for each of the events were: DiCello, vault,14.700, and floor exercise, 13.700; Greaves, uneven bars, 14.450; and McClain, balance beam, 14.300.

A free fan fest is available for attendees and gymnastics fans, whether they have event tickets or not, Aug. 10-11 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in conjunction with the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. The fan fest will be held on Grand Boulevard just outside of Sprint Center, as well as inside the KC Live! Block of the Power & Light District. The fan fest features interactive inflatables, face painting, photo opportunities, a DJ and more. Betty Rae’s Ice Cream Truck and Ruby Jean’s Juicery will both be on hand.

  • GK selfie station. Fans can capture championships memories in GK’s selfie station.
  • GK merchandise booth. Spectators can browse through GK’s popular leotard styles in their fun leotard and merchandise displays.
  • Merchandise. Fans can purchase everything gymnastics, including event-specific tees, other apparel, and more at the merchandise booth.
  • 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics. Spectators will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics. Representatives from St. Louis will be onsite with Trials information and to help place ticket orders. The St. Louis booth will also have a new social media photo opportunity.

Ways to watch
Fans who are unable to make it to Kansas City can watch all of the competitive sessions, as well as Wednesday’s podium training, online or television. All four podium training (junior and senior) and junior competitive sessions will be streamed on https://usgymchampionships.com and YouTube.
