Johnson atop junior all-around as women’s competition gets under way at OOFOS U.S. Gymnastics Championships

TAMPA, Fla. (August 19, 2022) – Madray Johnson (Dallas, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics) will take a half-point all-around lead into the second and final day of junior women’s competition at the 2022 OOFOS U.S. Gymnastics Championships after her cumulative 53.550 set the pace Friday afternoon at Tampa’s Amalie Arena. Johnson, the 2021 U.S. all-around silver medalist, holds a slight edge over Jayla Hang (Bellevue, Wash./Pacific Reign Gymnastics), who sits second at the midway point with a 53.000. Alicia Zhou (San Antonio, Texas/Love Gymnastics) is third with a 52.450.
Hang, who captured the 2022 U.S. Classic all-around title last month in Utah, notched high scores on vault (14.250) and balance beam (13.550), while Zhou – the reigning Junior Pan American Championships uneven bars gold medalist – topped the bars standings with a 13.750. Tiana Sumansekera (Pleasanton, Calif./West Valley Gymnastics School) led the way on floor exercise with a 13.550. So far this year, Sumanasekera has collected gold medals on floor at the Pan American Championships, City of Jesolo Trophy and Winter Cup.
Junior women’s all-around and apparatus champions will be crowned Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET on FlipNow Powered by USA Gymnastics. Senior women will follow at 7 p.m. ET on NBC. National champions in the men’s division will be determined Saturday with juniors leading off a full day of gymnastics at 1:30 p.m. ET on Flip Now. Seniors will battle it out live on CNBC at 7 p.m. ET. The 2020 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team will also be honored inside Amalie Arena Saturday evening.
