Malone leads senior men; Reive, Kan on top of juniors on Day 1 of Xfinity Champs

FORT WORTH, Texas (May 30, 2024) – Brody Malone (Aragon, Ga. /EVO Gymnastics) got his first all-around competition since 2023 off to an epic start, finishing Day 1 firmly in the lead Thursday, while Dante Reive (West Point, N.Y./United States Military Academy) and Maksim Kan (Muskego, Wis./Salto Gymnastics Center) sit atop the 17 year old and 16 year old divisions, respectively at the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Dickies Arena.

Malone No. 1 on Day 1

The 2021 and 2022 U.S. all-around champion, Malone ended Thursday night with a score of 85.950, sitting in first place ahead of Fred Richard (Stoughton, Mass./University of Michigan) in second with 84.350 and Donnell Whittenburg (Baltimore, Md./Salto Gymnastics) in third with 83.500.

The only thing that seemed to be different about Malone was the brace on the reconstructed right knee that he badly injured in March of 2023. The 2022 World champion on high bar suffered his injury on that apparatus, so it seemed only fitting in Fort Worth that his top performance came on high bar, posting the top score of 14.900. He was third on still rings with 14.400, fourth on pommel horse with 14.100, seventh on floor with 14.000, and eighth on parallel bars with 14.550. He performed one vault and scored 14.000.

The 2023 World all-around bronze medalist, Richard was second on high bar (14.400) and third on floor (14.600). Whittenburg was first on vault, with a two-vault score of (14.350; 14.450, 14.250), and he was fourth on rings (14.350). Other top apparatus performers were Paul Juda (Deerfield, Ill./University of Michigan) on floor (14.750), Stephen Nedoroscik (Worcester, Mass./EVO Gymnastics) on pommel horse (15.400), Alex Diab (Hinsdale, Ill./EVO Gymnastics) on rings (14.800), and Curran Phillips (Naperville, Ill./EVO Gymnastics) on parallel bars (15.500).

Reive in front for 17

Reive sits as the junior men’s 17-year-old division leader with an overall 78.964, highlighted by a 14.038 on floor. Nathan Roman (Poway, Calif./Agility) ranks second with a 77.564, also leading with the highest score of the night on high bar with a 13.752. Ty Roderiques (Knoxville, Tenn./GymTek Academy) is currently third place in the all-around with a 76.955. Nartey Brady (Los Ranchos, N.M./Eagle Ridge Gymnastics) leads the field on rings with a 13.952, with Nathan Underhill (Ocononomoc, Wis./Salto Gymnastics Center) leading on parallel bars (13.350), Owen Cendana (Frisco, Texas/Texas Dreams Gymnastics) on pommel horse (12.667) and Chase Pappas (Franklin, Tenn./Harpeth School of Gymnastics) on vault (14.505).

Kan dominating 16

Kan finished the day as the top athlete in the junior men’s 16-year-old all-around (77.655) and on pommel horse (13.813), vault (13.750) and high bar (13.054). Hunter Simpson (Palmetto, Fla./EVO Gymnastics) ranks in the all-around in second (74.154) and Keifer Hong (Tomball, Texas/Cypress Academy of Gymnastics) third (73.772). Hong also is also on top of the floor (13.267) and rings (13.050) leaderboards. Christian Bart-Williams (Murphy, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics) led parallel bars, scoring a 12.900.

The second day of the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships will see junior and senior women take the floor Friday beginning at 1:45 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the junior and senior women in session 1 on the USA Gymnastics YouTube and the senior women in session 2 on Peacock. The men will resume competition on Saturday, June 1 where U.S. champions and National Teams will be determined.
