All-time greats set for 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships
SAN JOSE, Calif. – Some of the best gymnasts in history are set to vie for national titles and National Team berths at the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, August 24-27 at SAP Center in San Jose, California.
This event looks to be the most star-studded U.S. championships of all time. The men and women who will compete have collectively won 12 Olympic medals, 50 World Championship medals and 46 national titles. Eleven are Olympians or Olympic alternates, 14 have been World Championships roster members and 12 have won a U.S. title at some point in their gymnastics career.
The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships also marks the first time two Olympic all-around gold medalists will compete at the same U.S. Championship. 2016 Olympic all-around champion Simone Biles and 2020 Olympic all-around champion Sunisa Lee headline the field of Olympic and World medalists registered for the event.
The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships serve as the selection competition for USA Gymnastics’ National Teams for junior and senior women and men and will determine the men’s rosters for the 2023 FIG World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium and the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, which will be held this fall. Women’s competition will help determine invitees to the Pan American Games/World Championships selection camp in September.
Women’s Title Up For Grabs
Already the winningest gymnast in U.S. history with 24 national titles overall, Biles will go for her eighth career all-around title in San Jose. In addition to Lee, Olympic floor exercise champion Jade Carey and World medalists Skye Blakley, Jordan Chiles, Kayla DiCello, Shilese Jones and Leanne Wong highlight the veteran lineup of women and will be joined by rising stars such as 2023 Core Hydration Classic vault champion and all-around bronze medalist Joscelyn Roberson, 2023 Core Hydration Classic uneven bars champion Zoe Miller and 2023 Winter Cup all-around bronze medalist Nola Matthews.
The competition will also feature the next generation of top junior women, including 2023 Junior World team and floor exercise silver medalist Hezly Rivera and 2023 Core Hydration Classic junior all-around champion and silver medalist Kieryn Finnell and Tatum Drusch.
Men Seek New Champion
Leading the men’s roster are 2020 Olympians Yul Moldauer and Shane Wiskus, two-time World medalist Donnell Whittenburg and 2021 World pommel horse champion Stephen Nedoroscik. Joining the veterans on the nation’s top stage are young talent including 2023 Core Hydration Classic all-around champion and runner-up Asher Hong and Khoi Young, and 2023 Winter Cup all-around silver medalist Fred Richard, the 2023 NCAA all-around champion.
On the junior side, 2023 Core Hydration Classic junior champion Xander Hong, Asher’s brother, is one of the top contenders along with 2023 Development Program National Championships all-around champion Kiran Mandava, 2023 Junior World team member Kai Uemura and 2023 Core Hydration Classic junior all-around silver medalist Oleksandr Shybitov.
