Biles leads seniors, Rose is top junior after Day 1 of women’s competition at Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships

SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 25, 2023) – Simone Biles (Spring, Texas/World Champions Centre) posted the top score in three of four apparatus to take a sizeable lead in the women’s all-around Friday at the 2023 U.S. Gymnastics Championships at SAP Center. Simone Rose (Sammamish, Wash./Pacific Reign Gymnastics) sits atop the junior all-around standings after Day 1 of competition.

Biles leads in all-around, 3 apparatus

Biles posted an all-around score of 59.300 on the strength of session-high scores on vault (15.700), balance beam (14.450) and floor exercise (14.800). She was third on bars with a 14.350. After posting the 15.700 on vault with her Yurchenko double pike, Biles followed with a Cheng that scored 14.900, giving her the overall lead in the vault with an average of 15.300. Shi Jones (Auburn, Wash./Ascend Gymnastics Center) also had a strong night and is currently second in the all-around with a 56.750, posting the highest uneven bars score with a 14.900. Skye Blakely (Frisco, Texas/WOGA Gymnastics) was consistent through each rotation to round out the top three all-around with a 55.700.

Rose blooms in junior competition

In junior competition, Rose ranked first in the all-around with a 53.050 overall and leads on vault with a 13.750 and floor with a 13.100. Hezly Rivera (Oradell, N.J./WOGA Gymnastics) is second in the all-around with a 52.750 and also leads all competitors on bars (13.850) and beam (13.750). Kieryn Finnell (Pittsford, N.Y./RGA) is currently third in all-around competition with a 52.500.

Winners in the all-around and each apparatus are determined by combining Friday’s scores with Sunday’s second day of competition. The men return to the floor Saturday for their second and final day of action.
