Hong rallies for U.S. men’s title at Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships

SAN JOSE, Calif. (August 26, 2023) – Asher Hong (Tomball, Texas/Stanford University) rode out a continuously changing leaderboard to win his first U.S. senior men’s all-around title Saturday at the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships at SAP Center.

Leading after Saturday’s Day 1, Hong posted consistent performances on Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 170.930, leading the youngest top-3 podium in recent memory.

In addition to his all-around gold, the 19-year-old Hong also took home still rings silver (30.098) and had scores of 27.622 on floor, 26.450 on pommel horse, 30.560 on vault, 29.650 on parallel bars and 26.500 horizontal bar.

Hong’s Stanford teammate Khoi Young (Bowie, Md./Stanford University), the oldest of the top three at age 20, claimed the all-around silver medal with a 169.455, also placing second on pommel horse with a 28.601. Nineteen-year-old Fred Richard (Stoughton, Mass./University of Michigan) earned all-around bronze 169.311 and won gold on high bar with a 29.802.

Taking other apparatus titles were Paul Juda (Deerfield, Ill./University of Michigan) on floor (29.300), Stephen Nedoroscik (Worcester, Mass./EVO Gymnastics) on pommel horse (31.301), reigning champion Donnell Whittenburg (Baltimore, Md./Salto Gymnastics Center) on rings (30.272), Kameron Nelson (Evans, Ga./Ohio State University) on vault (28.325) and Yul Moldauer (Arvada, Colo./5280 Gymnastics) on parallel bars (31.360).

The U.S. rosters for the 2023 World Championships and Pan American Games will be announced Sunday morning, August 27. Those selected to each team will be automatically added to either the 2023 Senior National Team or Senior Development Team if they have not previously been named to the team.

The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships concludes Sunday with Day 2 of junior and senior women’s competition. The 2023-24 Junior and Senior Women’s National Teams will be determined along with national titles in the all-around and on each apparatus.
